drugsdestroylove asked: so funny story. i was watching King of the Hill (I don't know why because I don't even find that show funny) but they mentioned and explained "wabi sabi" and I was like omg his tumblr name makes sense to me now. lol. learn something new everyday and I just wanted to share this for no reason. that is all. :) wait but what is hygge? nevermind I just googled it. okay time for bed for me.. I'm having conversations with myself in your ask box.

Haha, nice! I guess it’s time for me to go into how I came up with my tumblr name. I rarely get any questions, let alone FAQ-style questions so I haven’t really thought of answering it yet.

I chose a combination of words that escape translation out of their native language. Wabi-sabi is a Japanese representation of a world-view and hygge is a Danish concept of culture involving the feeling one gets while surrounded by the people they care about in a completely relaxing setting. Both escape a direct translation they’re more to do with culture than any other aspect.

Wabi-sabi means (wikipedia entry):

a comprehensive Japanese world view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”.[1] It is a concept derived from the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence (三法印 sanbōin?), specifically impermanence (無常 mujō?), the other two being suffering (dukkha) and emptiness or absence of self-nature (sunyata).

Characteristics of the wabi-sabi aesthetic include asymmetry, asperity (roughness or irregularity), simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes.

Hygge means:

A comfort or cosiness beyond physical comfort such as the suffocation of a duvet on a cold winter’s night. It’s more appropriately designated in describing a feeling of comfort in the presence of loving friends gathered around a circle table (so that everyone can see everyone) and illuminated only by a single candle in the center (so that your back is to the darkness ad the focus of each person is on the present company).

When you combine the two untranslatable words it means something completely different to me. It’s more or less the impermanence of being comfortable or ‘cozy’ here on tumblr. It’s a nice escape to meet and talk with the people of tumblr but; it’s an entirely fleeting thought as reality and the ‘true-self’ begin to take over as soon as you log out. The truth is, in my opinion, that it’s always comfortable to talk with compassionate strangers but that it will never amount to the quality of real ‘hygge’, of real comfort.
